  “Adages” was composed in 2010 for Marcy and Kenyon Wilson for a premiere at the 2011 Southeast Region Tuba/Euphonium Conference in Chattanooga, TN. The composer selected six adages to represent using music.
  
  I. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. – The interpretation of this adage is that one always wants what someone else has instead of accepting one’s own uniqueness. During the movement, the tuba wants to be like the violin and imitates the violin’s melody. When the violin changes to pizzicato, the tuba eventually realizes it can’t be a violin and states a bold melody of its own. The movement ends with the violin playing its melody alone with pauses between the phrases as if looking over its shoulder wondering where the tuba is.
  
  II. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. – This setting represents a growing love despite the emptiness of being apart. Violin double stops, using the hollow intervals of fourths and fifths to represent longing, occur at the beginning and end. A short love duet between the two instruments occurs in the middle.
  
  III. Time flies when you are having fun. – A rollicking six-eight meter is used to represent a children’s game of tag. There is a lot of alternation of short phrases as if one instrument is trying to tag the other and the other is trying to avoid being tagged. The violin double stops and short accented tuba notes representing taunting.
  
  IV. Every cloud has a silver lining. – This movement is a prayer-like setting with alternation of minor and major harmonies representing the cloud and the silver lining respectively.
  
  V. He who hesitates is lost. – This movement is very rhythmic and syncopated with the two instruments alternating phrases in the manner of a call and response. It calls for split-second precision between the performers therefore representing the adage.
  
  VI. A rolling stone gathers no moss. – The last movement is a perpetual motion in a rolling six-eight meter. The musical ideas are very chromatic with the exception of main theme which first appears in the tuba and returns in either instrument, both instruments together, or both instruments in imitation. Towards the end, there are a few brief pauses and low accented tuba notes as a life of activity has a few bumps along the way.

  This work commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first controlled flight by an aircraft using its own power. The first movement, “Inspirations”, musically represents the influences on our imagination to fly like a bird. The second movement, “Experiments”, begins with a four-measure theme that goes through a number of transformations throughout the movement. It represents the basic idea of the Wright Flyer and its adjustments made to enable it to fly with control. The last movement, “Triumphs”, alternates a celebratory section in 7/8 and 6/8 with a sustained “melody of flight”.   Four Spanish Dances was commissioned in 1997 by Dr. Andy Wen for saxophone alone for a performance at the World Saxophone Congress in Valencia, Spain. The composer has subsequently created several duet versions. The "Zortziko" is a fast dance with five beats per measure with frequent dotted rhythms. The "Flamenco" is a dance in minor that disguises its modality by vacillating between the normal and lowered second degree of the scale and the normal and raised third degree of the scale. It has a narrow range, absence of strict meter, expressive ornamentation, short phrases, melancholy mood, and often begins with "ay". The "Malaguena" is an emotional song using an ostinato of VIII, VII, VI, V in minor with an improvised melody. The "Polo" is moderate dance with three beats per measure with hemiola rhythms.   The title comes from the Gypsy influences that inspired this composition. The Chalga is a form of Bulgarian music a mixture of Balkan folk, incorporating a blend of Arabic, Turkish, Greek, and Roma (Gypsy) influences, as well as motifs from Balkan traditional music, even flamenco and klezmer music. The second movement, Flamenco is a Spanish song with Gypsy influences. The Csárdás begins with a slow section with some freedom of tempo and is followed by a fast, fiery section.

  The inspiration for Kaleidoscope is the ever-changing geometric patterns that appear when using this visually stimulating toy. I. Quadrangles for Flute and Bb Clarinet is in a fast 4/4 using lots of harmony on 4ths and melodic material based on 4ths. II. Ellipsoids is for Flute and Bb Clarinet or Bass Clarinet and is in a slow 3 with overlapping phrases suggesting all sorts of oval shapes. III. Pentagonsfor Flute or Alto Flute and Bb Clarinet or Bass Clarinet is in a moderate 5/4 with harmony and melodic material based on fifths. IV. Triangles for Flute or Piccolo and Bb Clarinet or Eb Clarinet is in a fast 6/8 with thirds being the harmonic and melodic departure point.   This piece was composed for the Ballif Duo, consisting of Kristi Ballif, flute and Adam Ballif, clarinet. The inspiration for the work was Edward Elgar’s “Enigma Variations”. Elgar created a marvelous set of variations that treat the theme symphonically by varying the motivic ideas instead of just keeping the form of the theme constant and building the variations on that structure. The result is a set of variations that are connected, yet varied in mood. “Regal Variations” is smaller in both instrumentation and the number of variations, but it tries to capture the symphonic quality of Elgar’s work. The title is an anagram of Elgar’s name.

  "Three Flirtations" is a musical description of courtship. "Innocent" is a flirtation between two good friends whose friendship is blossoming into love but they don’t quite know it. "Sultry" can be described as a dance of seduction with both parties overtly expressing their attraction to each other, yet with an air of mystery. This movement can be performed on English horn and fleugel horn. "Coy"begins with a staccato teasing motif. The more aggressive teasing and playfulness permeate this movement but two lyrical sections that are more innocent in nature interrupt it.

  "Three Greek Dances" was composed for Konrad Owens and Adam Brennan. The dances are stylized by preserving the flavor of the dances while treating the material in a more developmental and contrapuntal manner. Kalamationos is the most popular Greek dance and is Peloponnesian in origin. Like its cousin, the Syrtos the national dance of Greece, it is in 7/8 meter grouped as 3-2-2. Zeibekiko has its origin in the Eastern Aegean Islands. It is in 9/4 meter at a slow tempo with a lot of syncopation. Hassapikos is a buthcher’s dance in 2/4 time with eight measure phrases. It begins moderately and increases tempo throughout the dance.
